In 1961, interior designer Christiane Gautrot, painter Desmond Knox-Leet and theater director and set designer Yves Coueslant, who were all friends, jointly established a store at 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris to showcase their designs and creations. At the beginning of its establishment, Diptyque did not make fragrances. The reason was very simple. The three of them were all laymen in perfume. In 1963, Diptyque began to produce handmade candles. It soon became famous all over the world for its high quality and elegant fragrance. Today, it has become a leader in the scented candle industry.
